Hey guys,

Hope that you've been enjoying your holidays!
Anyway the annual CO camp will be held on 6th December to 8th December.
If you do not have the consent form, you can get it from your respective SL. For those who already have the consent form, please hand it up to your SL during your next practice. The camp is compulsory to all. For those who really cannot make it, please get the Leave Application Form from your SL and attach any documents to prove that you cannot attend the camp. You will have to hand it up to 龙老师 yourself.

SL, please prepare a piece for your Sections to perform. There may be parents coming and hence it will be good if we can show them what we have learnt ^^

As you can see, I have given a blog a brand new look, just like how we are...new.
Haha, just hope that we can co-operate well with each others just like how you guys did it with the previous batches of EXCOs. Oh yeah, and do check the blog more often. Hey guys! Haha first time posting something here xD

Ok, anyway, it doesn't seems that most of you guys were following this blog for the past few weeks. Too busy for studying, perhaps? Or simply just because the juniors don't know anything about it and the seniors have forgotten as well? Well, it's not the point. What I hope is that all of you will be able to check this blog at least a few times per week. It doesn't really takes much time compared to your schedule anyway. Just a few minutes will do. We will try to put up some interesting stuff and sometimes announcements might be made HERE. We need to keep this blog ACTIVE. :D

Second thing, as what was mentioned during this evening's debrief, consent form MUST be in by tomorrow, if not NO CIP HOURS will be given to you. Just a reminder, reporting time tomorrow is 4.00pm at the MRT station stated in the map. Do bring along a bottle of water with you.

Last but not least, the CO friendship bands will be sold at $2 each. Bring your money on Monday and buy from Bryan if you want to have one. First come first served xD

What to say? It seems as if Joshua has already encapsulated what the five of us would have told you. But of course, we must each have our own words to say.

Here it goes.

12 months ago, or rather, 13 months, I was appointed to be one of CHSCO's 5 excos. I saw it not as a burden of responsibility, but rather an honour and a privilege to be tasked with leadership of this great CCA. First, I must say that serving alongside the other 4 newly-retired excos, namely Josh, Ben, BX & Gibson, was definitely memorable and enjoyable.

To the next five of you; you guys are a talented bunch. We chose you to succeed us, entrusting you with CHSCO hoping that you will feel the same honour to have the chance to lead, and carry out your duties with passion.

This is one step forward not just for them, but for you, the whole of CHSCO. There isn't a batch which won't have to leave. It's my turn now.

The legacy of CHSCO will continue, unfortunately one I will not be part of anymore. Having to listen to CHSCO from an audience's seat... I wish I could be closer.

Perhaps now is still early to say so, but... goodbye T.T

A New Chapter, Towards Greater Heights

It had been a long and tiring year… One filled with bittersweet memories, shared by all. No doubt the road we had travelled was rough, but we still made through. Through thick and thin, we stood by one another… How could anyone forget? It had been a wonderful experience being your President, but the time has come for me to pass the baton to a more competent batch of leaders. It is time for a renewal of leadership.

I must first congratulate the new Excos on their appointments. They have been identified and selected based on merit. They are a mark of Distinction, outstanding in character and abilities. The new team of excos, together with the various section leaders, will bring the Orchestra to greater heights!

The road ahead is unpredictable. It may be laden with obstacles and the only way to overcome them, would be to stay united in the face of adversity. Since we are all on the same boat, cooperation and harmony are essential in bringing about prosperity. There is much to be learnt from previous experiences, mistakes committed throughout the past years and problems to be solved, immediately. The path ahead is optimistic, please believe, it will be!

I dare say, with much certainty that the Orchestra is in good hands. Never allow the Orchestra’s spirit to waver! The most important task now is to unleash the full potential of the Orchestra. After today’s performance, I am convinced that the Orchestra would be able to scale greater heights! Potential without fulfillment is a waste.

With that, I would like to wish the new excos and the Orchestra all the best in the upcoming year. It will be a fun-filled journey ahead! It would be exciting to watch a new chapter unfold!

Woohoo!

That was our CO BBQ/Chalet stayover on saturday. It was a pity that some of you missed it, but to the rest, thank you all for coming.

This is probably one of the last times we will spend together as CHSCO '11 and I'm sure you all agree that it was an enjoyable one.

I apologise for the very few pictures and the low quality of them. I was busy playing and did not take many pictures, and had to compress what few pictures I had to be able to post them online. Ruowei and Lionel brought their cameras, so you may want to ask them for photos. :)

CHSCO Chalet cum BBQ

Hi guys!

Please take note that there are a few last min changes to our chalet. Check-in will no longer be on Friday as the teachers would not be around to supervise and 'babysit' us. BBQ will still be on on Saturday night.

Details for the Chalet cum BBQ are as follows:

Venue: Costa Sands Downtown East (Beside Escape Theme Park/Wild Wild Wet)

*** Please note that the chalet number will only be known on the day we check in. SLs will update you guys again on Sat, so stay tuned ***

Date: 7th to 8th May

More details are printed on the consent form. Please look for Liu Fang lao shi @ staff room 1 to collect your consent form if your haven't done so.

If you/your parents need more information regarding the Chalet cum BBQ this weekend, you can approach your SLs, the EXCOs or the teachers for assistance.

Clarifications on the score

Hellos! This is a clarification regarding the score and award presented.
I believe most of you have been able to move on already, so I'm feeling better to post this as well.

DISCLAIMER!!! (o.o) Please note that this is only based on what I've read from the source and how I interpreted it. (stated below) and I'm not trying to advocate the management or anything haha.

Regarding the clarification, some of you might be wondering (as seen from the tagboard) why after the reduction in score we received a silver award. (Instead of possibly, a gold.)

Firstly, I believe we were penalized 10% of our score.

3.1 Each school is required to submit a list of no less than 24 and no more than
80 participants. All participants must be current students of the school. They
are required to be in full school uniform or their respective Chinese Orchestra
costumes. 10% of the final mark awarded will be deducted for Chinese
Orchestras that field less than 24 or more than 80 participants. All
participants, including percussionists, are required to remain on stage for the
duration of the performances.

Secondly, this is the award system.

5.1 The Central Judging provides the opportunity for Chinese orchestras to
benchmark their performance standards. There is no pre-determined number
of gold, silver or bronze awards. Participating Chinese orchestras will be
awarded certificates based on their performances as follows:
Gold 80% and above
Silver 70% to 79%
Bronze 60% to 69%
Certificate of Participation 59% and below

5.2 To recognise the outstanding achievement of Chinese orchestras that have
attained high performance standards, schools that obtain a final mark of 85%
and above will receive the Gold award (with Honours).

With some mathematical calculations I think it will be quite clear that it is possible to get a Silver from a Gold with Honours score. I'm not trying to put us down or anything. This is just to clarify doubts with regard to the results.

Thank you for coming down this morning, Jinhong. You have been and still are such a wonderful senior and source of encouragement for us.

For the CO, I saw Jinhong's blog(link right -->) and stumbled across something Jinhong said was posted by Chengjun. I found it really meaningful and impactful. I know we were still kind of emotional this morning, but we will get over it, we have to. Let me share Chengjun's words with you(if you have not already seen them).

True, true. I felt exactly the same way nearly immediately after we got our results. Seeing you guys bond together and encourage each other was my best moment in this CCA in my 4 years. It made me feel like part of one warm family.

Rock on, CHSCO!

I'm really proud of you guys and remember,
we've done our best and we are the best!

Though none of us expected the outcome,
we know that our music was recognised by the audience and judges!
Our music played was of Gold with Honours' standard!
We performed without regrets and that's the highest standard of a musician!

It's been a long journey and I really enjoyed the process!
Though there were obstacles during our journey,
we managed to overcome them as one orchestra, one body.

Also, it would not have been possible without the guidance of Wei LaoShi,
our teachers, our instructors and others.
As such, I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who helped
us out and especially our seniors who came down despite having lessons!

It's really touching to see everyone

Gwyn here. To those who do not know me, I am from the 'o9 batch of seniors.

To everyone, I am proud of you guys!!!! You guys were great and I believe you guys were great on stage. Sorry that I wasn't able to go watch you guys but still, I heard you guys!!!!

Comparing with the other schools that I have heard, VS and others, you guys were definitely the best I've heard!!!

My friends who heard you guys playing yesterday were singing praises about you guys :)

To the sec 4s:

work hard guys!!!! you've still got a major test at the end of the year!!! do well!!!!! and make it into a institution of your choice!!!! then go on to do well in the next SYFs!!!!

work even harder for the o level's nxt yr!!!! and oso for concert nxt year!!!! :) this might be your first and last SYF in sec school but still despite the results, you guys have done the best!!!!!! the greatest ever!!!!

It had been a great experience to work with such a talented and committed musicians. It had been an amazing year, although it did not really end on the right note, the one which we expected it to be. But nonetheless, we were winners, in my opinion. We achieved what every Orchestra dreams of achieving. We INSPIRED and IMPRESSED.

To all of you who weren't present this evening, it is true, a silver award is what we have obtained.

I prefer to see it as a silver (with honours).

Let me explain. This morning, 82 uniformed people left for Singapore Conference Hall, 82 people stepped onto stage, 82 people put in their best, and 82 people achieved a Gold with Honours.
Due to an error on none of your part, our Gold with Honours was penalised to a silver.

This SYF, all of you put in a lot of effort, and what happened, we cannot repay you, nor can we express our apology. A few months ago, CHSCO set out on a journey to defend our title of Gold with Honours.

Some may have joined us later, but the effort you put in was no less than anyone of us. This SYF journey has been a truly meaningful one. The hard work we put in, the hours spent, the sweat perspired. I want to thank all CO members for the work they put in for this result.

Under the guidance of Wei Laoshi(thank him again) we have played to a standard that moved the judges. They stood to applaud us after our performance.

With the support of Long Laoshi, and all the other teachers + seniors(thank them again), we have pulled through to this day.

On stage, you guys shone, we shone, all 82 of us(83 + Wei Laoshi).

We did it.

Regardless of that award, we all know in our hearts what we truly deserve. We all know how high we stand, how high our achievement was for the penalty to pull us to just a silver.

21 April 2011. By right the end of our SYF journey, yes, but CHSCO doesn't end there.

CHSCO never ends.

Today has been a day of great Variation of Emotions.

We left school with great hope.

We performed with confidence.

We left with small doubt.

We returned with expectation.

We stood at School #40 with anticipation.

We shed tears in disbelief.

We waited with shattered hearts.

We understood with regret.

We held on comforted with the knowledge of what we truly deserved.

We celebrated with joy.

One journey has ended, but another continues.

CHSCO never ends.

I myself rest in the fact that a Gold with Honours was the judges' decision, that we REALLY did it.

WE really did it, all 82 of us.

The award we got did have an effect though. Instead of congratulation and instant celebration should it have been GwH, I saw everyone encouraging each other, wiping their tears, telling them how well they had played. That is something none of us excos, nor any teacher could have gotten you to do.

You played together, and you stood together, and I am proud to call myself part of this family, CHSCO.

Today, I did not see 82 individuals, I saw ONE CHSCO. One that depended on each other, and helped each other. One that bonded so well together.

My parting words for you today; you ALL did well, and none of you are that extra 2, none of you bear the blame for any of this, instead, you ALL contributed to that achievement. So CO members, look up, do not be ashamed, it is not your fault. You have the Gold with Honours.

Rejoice, for you know in your heart, we HAVE done it.

Remember, other schools may have 80 CO members worthy of GwH, but CHS has 82.

To my sec 4 juniors:

U guys totally exceed my expectations. Ur batch is the largest in ages. The erhu sec4 hardly need any coachin from us. The current excos are efficient in their duties.....most of u are at ur peak now....but all? prove it to me in the next 36 hrs

To my sec 3 juniors:

U guys.....for most of u this will be ur only syf, just like me when 09 was my only syf yr. I know that it is stressful, but you guys not only need to endure but outperform yourselves in the next 36 hrs. Trust me....when the moment its announced.....CHS GWH.....its an unforgettable feeling.....

To my sec 2 juniors:

I know not all of you are performing in syf, and those that are please do not think that even without GWH this time theres still another syf for you in 2 yrs time.....maybe you guys do not know what happened previously....band got silver 4 yrs ago broke our streak.....choir got gold 2 yrs ago broke our streak.....now the current score is 4/5....can you guys make it a 5/5?

To my sec 1 juniors:

Well, I hardly know any of you.....but great job for making it to the dream team! Dont feel inferior to your seniors, you guys have to potential to excel them. Let us make FULL use of the final practice sessions to steer ourselves towards our dreams.

I do not want us to regret the performance we have put up on that day, for all would have been too late. Let us step off the stage and be confident of our outcome, whatever that is desired.

We practice as one and perform as one. The hardwork and effort we have put in in the past few months SHALL NOT GO TO WASTE. There is no reason for us to fail, unless we derail in our spirits.

We are CHSCO, united as one, unwavered and committed. We are part of this dynamic family and our legacy as been built up by the past batches of musicians who have poured their hearts and souls into the cause they believed in.

Hi,

Practice yesterday was satisfactory.
I could sense the effort put in by various groups,
BUT.. I'm sure there are still room for improvements.
We have only 3 more practices to polish up our skills
before the much awaited day.
Furthermore, I suppose everyone hopes to continue
the GwH streak for Catholic High!

There's no time to waste.
It's the last shot, give it all!

Also, refrain from staying back late in the night
after CO to play soccer or basketball for the upcoming week.
We do not want anyone to be injured, especially hand injuries
or fall sick during this crucial point of time.

Ok,

We all heard today, the Choir has their... GwH

Yup, and if it isn't already clear to you, CO, we are next. Next week, our 'official' final push begins, but I believe that we don't need to wait until next week.

What should have been done has not been done, but what has not been done can still be done. What needs to be done can be started NOW.

It is clear that we have the potential, and we can achieve our GwH. We have heard it from our teachers, our seniors and whoever. We need to discover our true potential, and I think that we are close, but not there yet.

Notice that in the previous paragraphs, it states that 'we', CHSCO, are the ones to work towards clinching GwH. 'We' not 'he', ' our GwH' not 'his GwH'.

This 'us' refers to you and the other 79 people(80 with Wei laoshi). The award belongs to all of us, the responsibility too.

Another thing the 'we' shows is that the performance is about one performing group, not 80 individuals, we are one CHSCO. We play together.

We are all in the same boat, for the same destination.

We all have the same CCA.

We all have the same dream.

We will all wear the same uniforms.

We will all play the same songs.

We will all receive the same award.

What CHSCO gets is what you get.

What CHSCO gets depends on you.

We need to work as one, play as one, feel as one. We cannot merely have some people showing emotion in our songs, we need to have all. Think about what the song is about and how to add emotion e.g. playing/movement. EVERYONE is playing the song.

We go on stage for fifteen minutes to prove what we have been doing for donkey months. One line sums it up.

Effort = Results

If you know you can and have to improve, start NOW.

YOUR result is at stake.

WE will work together, then WE will celebrate together.

WE can do it!

Uniform check is on Friday, please get your:

White long sleeved shirt(standard collar(like your school uniform))
Black socks (please NO ankle socks)
Black leather shoes (leather, LEATHER and preferably, one right and one left shoe)
Ivory pants (check if they fit (should have done that weeks ago when we told you to))

Focus fully and put in your 110 percent effort.Leave everything behind and take a step forward.In everything we do, in order to succeed,SACRIFICES ARE INEVITABLE.Put your heart and soul into CHSCO.Endure and work hard for the final 2 weeks.

Please take note in these areas:

1.The feeling when playing the song, what you want your audience to hear.What are both songs about?

2.台风. The visual impact that you want the judges to see.

3.Small details.How well-polished are your songs?(pay close attention to parts which are slower and softer).

It is often the small details which are neglected.Those are the key places that impress the judges.For this week, i have seen changes in attitude(for a few ppl) but it is still evident that there are still ppl who lack the sense of urgency.PLS!wake up!you don't want to be the ones pulling us back

dunnoe whether anyone is reading BUT we will try our best to keep the blog alive. feel free to express urselves by commenting on the cbox.

anyways, the practice on Friday was rather okie. i thought it was rather efficient. The reason why Long lao shi allows u all to do homework doing co is to let u guys make use ur time. Because wei lao shi goes into details at certain parts of practice, not all of us are needed at times. Thus, you guys can use to time fully by reading or doing homework.

HOWEVER, i hope you guys treat it as a privilege instead of an entitlement. As long as you guys dun make noise when unneeded, i m perfectly fine with it. What i saw last practice is that you guys have made improvement. We are generally more co-ordinated now but at some parts we tend to speed up and lose track of the rhythm. However, i m still confident that we will improve.There are still room for improvement though...

As the SYF period edges closer, other CCAs like Band , Dance and even the EL Drama are gearing up for their chance at a GWH. We should too. Right now, i m satisfied with the performance but PLS REMEMBER not to slack. Remember tat this year's SYF will be more difficult because the results will be announced only at the last day. It might be more difficult BUT we must prevail and i m confident that we will do well in the end.

Remember, sacrifice now and reap the benefits in later.

The worst feeling is the feeling of regret.

Hello.

Today's practice was quite satisfactory. I believe we put in our effort and achieved today. This is the kind or improvement we are hoping for leading up to SYF.

However, let us not become too proud of our improvement and be complacent. We have a month or so ahead, and we still have room for improvement. One problem Long Laoshi had noticed and pointed out was that we still lack discipline. Latecoming, talking during practice... that sort of disruptions.

The excos had a short talk with her about it, and we have come up with a reason for it, and hope to solve it. We know that Wei Laoshi's style is to have a full orchestra before we begin practice, and to solve errors we come across. Thus, those who arrive early wait, and we spend time waiting while he practices a certain individual or group. We understand that he can spend a considerable amount of time, and leave others with little to do but sit and wait. People end up getting bored and talking, and the waiting has (we speculate) caused some to feel that there is no need to report on time, as they will have to wait anyway.

Starting Term 2 we will have to solve the attendace issue, and cannot tolerate latecoming. As for those who feel time is wasted sitting and waiting, we are trying to adjust the way we practice to maximise that time.

Another reason we have to wait long is that whoever is being practiced by Wei Laoshi ends up having to repeat practicing again and again and again and... ... ...
So, Dazu time is spend solving individual or group issues, which should have been gone through during Xiaozu or morning practice. Morning practices are called practices for a good reason, they are not meant as an excuse to skip assembly to eat breakfast, or talk to friends, or play handphone games.

Instead of playing the entire song over and over in the morning, we should follow Wei Laoshi's strategy of using each practice to be sure of 1 part, a few bars. Concentrating on a problem and practicing solves it, not playing the wrong thing repeatedly.

Monday's group practices should be used for the same purpose, so that when we all meet for Dazu, what we practice is playing together, and not one person playing his own part.

Dazu time is precious, we have around just 10 left.

It is time to get serious.

It is time to put in our all.

Focus.

Each person has his own part to be responsible of.

Don't let us down!

But don't hold us up...

Hello one and all, yesterday Joshua represented CHSCO to ballot for our SYF performace time slot.

We have gotten #46.

Date: 21st April 2011

Time: 11.10 a.m.

As we all know, we have less than 40 days, and less than 25 practices. This is just the beginning of the final lap. At this point in time, we should not be spending practice time going through problems with rythm, pitch and timing. It is time we focus on the more important emotion.

Everyone can play the same song, but what sets us apart, and makes us unique is the way we play it, the emotion the audience should be able to feel hearing us play our piece. As Joshua mentioned, that contributes to 50% of the SYF score. And that means that it is IMPORTANT!

Wei Laoshi ~~has exaggerated~~ exaggerates his actions, trying to cue us to play louder, softer, or slower. But it seems that a lot of the time, there is little response. And that brings me to my next point, watch the conductor. As Wei Laoshi has mentioned, he may not conduct the same way all the time, but what is important is that everyone follows him.

Those of you who went for the previous SYF would understand fully the importance of doing so. And besides paying attention while playing, please pay attention otherwise, it is truly frustrating for Wei Laoshi to ask a question and receive no reply, or signal for silence and have to wait long for us to settle down. That takes time.

Precious time.

Time that we could spend going through something crucial.

Furthermore, it spoils his mood to be ignored. With that said, I hope that you all can each brush up in whatever area, using this ~~holiday~~ week to catch up.

Today's practice was all over the place and many of us are not putting enough effort. It is already MARCH and i do not see any sense of urgency. It is really frustrating...

Ask yourselves one question.

"How big does CHSCO stand in your heart.?"

How much are you willing to put in for CHSCO.?For all that it has provided for you, you should learn to reciprocate. CO belongs to each and everyone of us and it is our responsibility to protect it. OUR LEGACY, OUR PRIDE,OUR CHSCO.

Ultimately, getting GWH is possible if each and one of us put in the effort and the hard work. GWH needs to be earned. I truly hope for the day where GWH is what we all believe we can get not something we all yearn for. And i believe it is possible.

well, today's rehearsal was not up to standard. It was not entirely terrible but it is definitely not enough.It was really disappointing, today is the 27 of feburary and SYF is in April 19-21. How are we able to go up on stage and defend our GWH,ESPECIALLY NOT WITH THIS KIND OF PERFORMANCE? A Gwh performance requires more than just playing the notes , it is the feeling, the emotions. Although some of us are performing well but it is all about the teamwork, the team effort. How is it fair that half the CO put in so much effort whereas the other half just do the bare minimum. Is it fair to those that worked so hard.? Is this truly an orchestra.?

Music is more than just playing the notes it is an expression of your feelings and emotions.

Use your heart to play ur instrument , this is how it feels to really perform. It is not always about the piece which you play but what kind of music you want others to hear.

A truly good piece of music is one which is felt by the heart, one which others would want to hear again. Right now, it is still lacking in our orchestra.BUT i believe tat we can achieve it. IF EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US PUT IN THE EFFORT.

Start now. Make a difference.

Our Annual CO camp will commence on 29 and 30 November, (overnight) in school.
Reporting time is 9.00 a.m. on 29th(Mon) and dismissal at 5.00p.m. on 30th(Tue).

Here is a plan of how it should commence, please look through it and ensure you know your role where it concerns you. We have to strive to run through our next rehearsal on Tuesday smoothly.

6 MORE DAYS TO OUR CONCERT !

Please memorise your scores by tomorrow as
we'll be having our 2nd rehearsal in the auditorium at around 3pm.
However, everyone is supposed to be seated outside the CO Room
by 2.30pm sharp with your instruments ready.
We'll only be moving our instruments to the auditorium when everyone is present.
If anyone is late, we'll just wait for him till he comes.
The rehearsal is expected to last for 2 and a half hours so if you want to be dismissed earlier, please refrain from being late and delaying the whole schedule.

Once again, please remember to sell our concert tickets to your family and friends

and tell Banxu the number of tickets you need.

Once payment is made, you will be able to get your tickets immediately.

As for those whose names are on the whiteboard, you should know what to do.

It's our concert so please show some enthusiasum in promoting the sales of our concert tickets.

Hi CO, as you can all see, we have around 13 days left to our performance. 13 days is not that long. All of you should have noticed that there is no way we can go on stage with the kind of performance we showed yesterday. I admit, the concert layout is not that simple, but we can do it, our practice schedule is
Fri 27/8 (normal practice time)
Mon 30/8 (normal practice time)
Fri 3/9 (normal practice time)
Tue 7/9 9.00 a.m. - ~3p.m.
Wed 8/9 9.00 a.m.- ~3p.m.
Thur 9/9 (Concert day!!! full day)
And... yes, do sell those tickets, it is true that it will be totally ugly to have more performers than audience. One more thing, ensure you have your uniform in check. Just to recap, you need...

1 long-sleeved white shirt
(Shirt!!! not T-shirt, it must have a STANDARD collar like those on our school uniform, not a round collar or whatever)( please try and get one that does not have a front pocket that the blazer cannot cover, it is unsightly)

1 purple blazer
(check that it fits, the sleeves are long enough and you have 8 golden buttons, 2 on the front, and 3 small ones on either cuff)

1 pair of ivory pants
(important!!! this HAS to fit if not... use your imagination. The waist should fit, and when seated, the legs should not reveal more than 2cm of your socks from your shoes.)

2 black socks
(socks, not ankle socks, they have to pass your ankles)

2 black shoes
(leather, LEATHER shoes, not canvas or any other material. Preferably one left and one right, both the same size and model. With or without laces is fine.)

1 golden tie
(will be passed to you on concert day)

If your blazer and/or pants have any problems, please seek help asap. (note: your pants should have about 2 inches folded and sewn in the pant legs if they require lengthening)

Sec 1s that have yet to receive your recently ordered uniforms, please wait patiently, we will try to get them quickly.

Last important thing, practice hard. Exams are over, please put in more effort now for our concert, don't let us down.

A few announcements :

Firstly,
There will be no sectionals on Monday, 5/7/10 due to Youth Day Holiday.
Thus, combine practice resumes on Wednesday, 7/7/10 from 3.30 - 5.00 .

Secondly,
We would like all CO members to donate $5 min. for the cost of the drinks that we will be selling for Homecoming on the next coming Saturday, 10/7/10.
Although it is optional, we hope that all of you can participate actively as we the profits earned on Homecoming will go directly into our CO Fund which will be used for activities such as our annual camp. Remember to sms the amount you are contributing to Joshua, Benjamin or Ban Xu and pass the exact amount to us during this Wednesday's practice.

Lastly,

this is your secretary, martin. this post is just to serve as a reminder that our bi-annual concert has been postponed to the end of the year (around November) because of many factors. however this does not mean you all can take a break. within the next half a year, the sec 4s will have already 'stepped down' so now its up to the sec 3s to take the lead and ensure that we are fully prepared for our concert. i believe everyone wants to end the year with a bang right? so hopefully, we would still stay strong and practise hard for the upcoming concert. go chsco! we can do it! :D

For the current Sec 3 batch (If you are reading this),

it is about time for you to take up leadership positions already.

The route is never easy, be it SYF or concert.

To me, both are equally important.

I was fortunate to be part of a team which worked hard together and put our differences aside to achieve our target of Gold-with-Honours last year.

There comes a time when we have to heed a certain call.

For those who didnt notice, last Thursday (22 May) was the one-year anniversary of the day we successfully defended our GwH.

As part of a team who was involved in SYF,

I have to say that it will be a tough journey ahead.

Guarantee plus chop.

However, instead of fearing, we hope that you guys will be able to step up to the challenge and do your best to attain it again alright! (:

No stress there, but I think it's a tradition to speak to you all about it before the SYF batch takes over.

So at the meantime, focus on your concert, do it for yourself, do it for CHSCO and let's do it for Catholic High School Aesthetics! :D

I'm confident that you guys will be able to showcase to us what CHSCO has achieved in her short 10-Year history.

For those who aren't aware, the CHSCO performance attire comprises of:
1. Blazer (Made by tailor, paid by school)
2. Pants (Made by tailor, pay yourself, around $20+, PRICE TO BE COMFIRMED)
3. Long-sleeve collar white shirt (Please buy this yourself.)
4. Black leather shoes and black socks. (Please buy these yourself.)

The prices for the tickets of our concert have been comfirmed.
$10 and $15.
Each member has to sell AT LEAST 10 tickets.

I know it seems a little late to implement this.

But each baby step we're taking is to bring us closer to our goal, yeah?

Current plan: The duty roster will go in rotation between 3 groups :

1. TAN BO

2. ERHU

3. guanyue + daji + cello bass

Things you could do to improve on our CO room's cleaniness :
1. Please throw your litter away into the dustbin outside CO room.

2. Please do not bring any food or flavoured drinks into the CO room.

3. Please (especially erhu) place your instruments neatly when you pack your instruments into the storeroom.

4. Please keep your scores properly at designated places if you wish to leave it in school. Although bringing it home would be ideal. You can still practice the song mentally in your head, and take the chance to memorise the score.

5. Pack the chairs back after every practice to make it a better environment for everyone, and bring about convenience for the group that is cleaning the CO room.

6. Groups on duty can sweep the floor (2 brooms available), pick up litter, arrange the furniture in the CO room, etc.

Do your part for CO, even though it may seem insignificant.

After the concert, it means that the Sec4s can finally step down.

It also means the new EXCOs and SLs from the current Sec3 batch will take over on the day of our concert.

Thus there will be a voting exercise that would take place on Friday before or after dazu.

Please think through who you would like to vote for for the 5 exco positions : President, Vice President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Quarter Master.

Vote based on the person's capabilities, don't vote for him just because he's your friend.

More details will be given on the day of the voting.

I don't think I'm making any sense now already.

In short, time is running out, so start practicing hard now, kay?

From what I heard, CO Camp will be held from 19-21 Nov.

And on day 1, there will be an outdoor programme for sec sch ppl...

So yeah, there are 3 choices.

Archery, Lazer Quest(=DDD LOL) and Inline Skating.

Archery and Inline Skating will be held in school while Lazer Quest will be held at Sembawang.

Umm. Sec 4s who are interested please contact me or Jason by tmrw (Monday)

School will sponsor half the cost.

So this means that Lazer Quest will cost $12.50, Inline skating $4 and Archery's cost will depend on the number of ppl going.

Heyys everyone (:
How are your results?
Those who had scored well, congrats (:
Those who hadn't, don't worry.
Jiayou, work hard and you'll have another chance to achieve good results.
Remember, you reap what you sow.

Our school based exams are over, but the sec 4's start their O's tomorrow.
Thus we won't be having sectional practice on 26 October, Monday after school.
However, please be reminded that there will still be combined practice on Wednesday and Friday.
Sec 1 and Sec 2's, please report at 2pm.
Sec 3s report at 3.30pm (1/2hr lunch break).

Please make sure you practice more during this post-exam period so that we can progress faster.
Then we can bring Movement 1 of 抒情变奏曲 to a close and start on a new song.
The combined songs that we are practicing now, including the sectional songs, are in preperation for next year's concert, which would be held on 21st May 2010.
Considering the number of songs we are supposed to prepare and the rate we're going, we are on a rather tight schedule.
Please put in more effort at home and during practice!

During the EOY November/ December holidays, we'll be holding our Annual CO Camp from the 19th - 21st of November. It'll be a 3Day 2Night event. Please try to keep that period of time FREE so that you can attend the camp. Those who had already planned for a vacation overseas, it's okay. You'll have another chance to attend the camp next year.

己所不欲，勿施于人。

这句话相当普及，却百听不厌。

但我却赫然发现，就连在公教中学，我国顶尖的学府，还是有人摸不清其中的道理。

此现象滋生，反映了我国教育系统的残缺，漏洞。

在这日新月异的二十一世纪，竞争激烈。无论是白领阶层，蓝领阶层，也都如此。在这你争我夺的环境，人情味早已不复存在，原始的品性行为，待人处事，这重重的本能也都流失了。

长一辈的人，只能眼睁睁地看着我们这一代逐渐腐蚀，时不时摇摇头，叹叹气。他们束手无策，被击败了，被科技，金钱，贪婪，所击退。

这却不是出乎意料的。

科技，对他们展开战争。它持着威力强大的武器，如电脑，电视，游戏机，向人类进攻。这军队蜿蜒如龙，杀气如风。我们这一代的年轻人，早已败在它脚下。我们的前辈，不但得面对前方的敌人，还需尽力维护我们，不让我们受到科技所带来的不良影响。

但我们不争气，思想不成熟，是敌是亲，都分不清。最后盲目地视敌为友，反攻我们的守护者。

这样个里应外合，两面夹攻，前辈们自然地招架不住。

金钱，

不是万能的。但没有它，万万不能。

就因如此，我们犹如傀儡一般，在金钱的驱使下做了许多不应该的事。

我们的生活，围绕着“钱”一字。

做任何事之前，都得先想：“我这么做会有什么回报？”

我们只注重金钱利益，金钱也成为了做许多事的出发点。

就这样，“钱”只需单车入宫，辗过前辈们懊丧的脸孔。

我们对钱的欲望无可衡量。

也就是钱，促成了我们贪婪的个性。

朴学亮的“子曰”，把这现象表达得十分深切：

“钱”也使我们忘了饮水思源的传统美德，报恩的观念，回馈父母，社会的意念。

这一场不流血的仗只有文化，传统，品德会受伤。

人类逐渐被击垮，仅存的，用双手就能点数。

为什么人会那么的脆弱? 那么的不堪一击?

因为我们少了“仁”，孔子的中心思想。

仁是古代中国人的一种伦理观念，是中国古代重要的道德标准、人格境界及哲学观念。

当孔子的徒弟樊迟问他什么是“仁”，孔子回答：“爱人”，主要是善待他人。

“仁”的表现是：

己欲立而立人

己欲达而达人

己所不欲勿施于人

如以人为本体表现在具体的行为上：

对父母为孝对兄弟为悌
对朋友为信对国家为忠
对人则有爱心

这纯粹可以以表面意思来理解。

现在，我将切入正题。

在这部落格右方的联络格（Cbox)，最初建立的目的是想鼓励团员们提供意见，无论是对练习，对华乐团有力的建议都会受到欢迎。另外，也是想为团员提供一个联系彼此，了解对方的平台。

如有任何不满应以尊重的语气直接向组长，行政团员（主席，副主席，等等）或任何一位负责老师倾诉，反映。而不是在这联络格上发泄，做出人身攻击，语无伦次地批评，嫌弃，埋怨。

我们的团员真的少了“仁”吗？不懂得善待他人，不懂得尊重，不懂得感激，不懂得礼貌。

我为什么会这么说？

最近，在联络格上看见有位匿名人留言，指我们主席放上的华中华乐团的录像，抒情变奏曲，是盗版的。

这不但显示出那个人不但不会感激，反而品性低劣得必须嫌弃。

可悲，也只有这词能形容他。

自以为躲在电脑荧幕后就能随心批评，但我告诉你，逃得了一时，逃不了一世。
品德教育欠缺的你，如不“改头换面”，长大后一定在社会上吃亏。不管你有都么聪明，最终还是会沦落成社会的人渣，是败类，是窝囊废。被社会排斥，排挤，追后舍弃。

到时，看你是否还能得意。

你要知道，在你说这番话的同时，放映出你的家教不足。你的父母也是这样吗？实在令我质疑。

另外，还注意到有人作出人身攻击。同样的，放映出那个人的低劣，和道德教育失败的最佳示范，反面教材。

不知不觉，你已成为大家的笑柄，是我们唾弃，嘲笑的对象。又一个可悲的人。

我不是你们的老师，我不是校长，也不是你们的家长，因此不能教育你们，也不能给你们一巴掌。与其批评他人，不如先自我反省。都是个中学生了，怎么还这么懵懂无知? 思想这么不成熟？

己所不欲，勿施于人。三番四次地提醒，就是希望团员们在做任何事之前，先仔细想想，如果这句话变成是对我说，我会有何感受？会不会受伤害？任何举动之前都需经过大脑洗涤，过滤。

在这以科技，金钱为主的社会，人早已忽略了“仁”。

人世间变得冷漠无情，但希望至少我们华乐团不会推波助澜。

希望我们华乐团的成员都能品德兼优。

学习出众，品德高尚，音乐才华横溢

这是我们各位都应迈向的方向，是成功的指南针，是我们共同的目标。

A few announcements :
1. Practice starting on Monday, 24/8/09, will be back to 3 hours.
Both 小组 & 大组 would be from 3.30 - 6.30 .

2. Tentative practice schedule :
Monday 小组 - with respective instructors.
Wednesday 分组 - 魏老师 will teach individual groups.
Friday 大组

3. Wednesday 大组 tentatively will be changed to 分组 till furthur notice as we are wasting our time during 大组 because we have not learnt the new song at all. Please make good use of the 小组 and 分组 practices to learn from the instructors. SLs and ASLs please remind your respective instructors to teach you guys.

4. Please make sure ALL MEMBERS including Sec Ones learn both 梦蝶 and 抒情变奏曲 for the Concert next year.

5. If you are unwell and missed practice, please pass your MC to Martin / Kuan Hoe. Excuses such as tuition, project, etc. are not accepted. If you have any extra lessons, tests or retests, please inform your SL/ASL beforehand. You are expected to turn up for practice after your extra lessons, tests or retests.

6. Sec 4's who have not returned blazers, please pass it to Yi Long / Kuan Hoe ASAP.

7. Those who have not paid for the CO Shirt / SYF Photo you ordered, please pay to Martin ASAP.

8. Please fill in and hand up the HOMECOMING 2009 Donation Form. All profits will go directly into our CO FUND which will be used for activities like our annual camp. (:

Erhu Group Briefing

Hey Guys,

There is a meeting for all erhu section members(sec 1 to 3s) on wednesday at 2.50pm outside CO Room. I am conducting briefing for the Grading Examination and at the same time to collect the 15dollars for GECO concert DVD.

Those who cannot make it please imform me or Renjie beforehand. If not, i expect all 21 of you to be present. Kuan Hoe and Yiwei are excluded. Those who are not going for grading this year are expected and required to be present as well.

Please bring along 15dollars for the DVD. And i may want to discuss with you all on a possible sectional outing with you guys one of these days. I need your suggestions and ideas though. Please think about it.

If the assembly programme for the lower sec is delayed, then please come right after the assembly. Will wait for you there.

All absentees must be accounted for.

CFA Chinese Instrumental Examination

Hey Guys

This is just to inform you all that the registration of NUS Centre of the Arts Chinese Instruments Grading Examination has officially opened today, 14 July 2009.

Inclusion of new instruments into the examination syllabus :

In addition to the instruments in the examination syllabus (Erhu, Dizi, Guzheng, Pipa, Yangqin, Ruan), 4 new instruments will be included in this year’s syllabus, namely the Liuqin, Sheng, Suona and Cello.

Registration starts from 14 July 2009 and will close on 2 October 2009.
Registrations made by 11 September 2009 are entitled to an early-bird special rate.

Please visit http://www.nus.edu.sg/cfa/chime/registration.html for more information about the rates and important details of the examination. And also to download the registration form.

For Erhu Section, do not submit the forms and register for the examination on your own.
It is compulsory that we submit both the forms and money together under our school name and group when sectional practices resume.
For erhu members, you will be informed of when to bring the cash/cheques and forms for submission.
As in previous years, we submit the necessary documents as a group to facilitate the notification of results and for everyone's convenience.

In the meanwhile, please practise diligently.

Two things to take note:

For those who have not handed up the $15 for CO Tee, please remember to bring it during your sectional practices next week and pass it to your section's representatives respectively.
Bring the sponsor cum fund raising form for CO homecoming which was given out last week.A nil return is expected if you are not donating.

Anyway, great job people!

It's a nice feeling when you achieve what you want right?

That's why we say work hard and you will enjoy the rewards. ;)

It has not been an easy one year.

But thank goodness in the end, we have successfully defended what was earned 2 years back.

However, everyone must remember that results are not everything.

Although we have achieved a GwH, we should always remember to be humble and respect others.

(Pride comes before a fall remember?)

But nevertheless, congratulations again to everyone, and we thank everyone for your effort put in during the final lap.

5 DAYS! :O

Time really flies.

Just want to voice out some positive point I noticed for the past few days.

As SYF draws nearer, there is a great improvement in attitude in virtually everyone (:

It's really encouraging, and I do have a firm belief that, if this continue, the GwH would be more secure.

Many thanks to the SLs, who have put in a lot of hard work during the past few days, which were the days of the Final Countdown.

When the levee breaks

I daresay I am a very imaginative person.
I once imagined that i would lose my first kiss before secondary school.
I once imagined that i would get a scholarship and need not to worry anymore about my future.
I once imagined that CHSCO would clinch 'Gold with Honours' in SYF2006.
They all came true.

I must admit that I have a flair in imagining, but all of them came through when i was still one of the most insignificant arseholes in the century. I even tried to quit back then, because of its insignificance and incompetence. I once thought of it to be an abattoir that gives off the foul stench of rotten flesh with a queue of innocent children waiting to be slaughtered in it. I was vey much an idiot back then.

If that was comparable to Shawshank, then the Redemption must be SYF2006. I still remember the moment when Ms. Leong shed tears in the tuning room; the moment Ivan gave us the simplest encouragement - a handshake with a sincere "Good luck,"; the moment we entered the Singapore Conference Hall, when every audience were staring at our stunning purple blazers; the moment my bow got stuck in my sleeve when the Wind Crescenti's blowing and blowing; the moment Vincent told us to be prepared for a Gold; the moment 5 of us squeezed into a backstage toilet just to listen to the results after being chased out of the hall and lastly, the suffocating silence that enveloped us while the old man was announcing our results. "Catholic High School, Gold," I looked into Kenneth's eyes only to find the same anxiety I was going through, "with Honours." We ran out of the toilet like rabid dogs gone rampage, like what Jamal Malik did in Slumdog Millionaire, and I knew, I wasn't the most insignificant arsehole of the century anymore, I am a part of CHSCO.

And now, 28 days to SYF2008, I'm here, writing this in hope to encourage you all even at the slightest magnitude, even if we had struck the faintest chord.

Sometimes i wonder why did i abandon my discipline stance, why did i stop shouting at YuNan and Alex for their neverending antiques? All i do now is to console myself, "Things could have been worse, they could have been twins." My answer is that wiping random bubbles off a rabid canine's mouth is simply unable to prevent its eventual death. Discipline is no longer a trait that can be drilled into you all, it's dependent on your maturity; it's obedience that can be trained, and the worst of all, out of fear. I wouldn't want to convert CHSCO into a regime. I wouldn't want to be Mugabe. I'm sure Jason wouldn't want it too. (right?) Yet, it's this negligence that has cultivated CHSCO's most augmented strength - our impenetrable bond. We don't need to cheer to attain this, for we are CHSCO.

The reality is, It's already 5 minutes to midnight. The sand is seeping out fast, the clock's ticking and the levee's going to break. 28 more days, the levee will break and unleash its wrath upon us; some will sink beneath the water and fade away in crying shame and some will hold onto a plank and float on the water, surviving the catastrophe as mediocres as they had always been. However, we are different. We will ride on the waves, surf through the tide and clinch our deserved Honours, for we are CHSCO.

Omg it's like so fast, last year was like yesterday, and here we are, approching the final count- down now.

Guys, it's not a time for conflict!

I'm sure no one wants CONFLICTS to block our path right? ;)

I believe that it has been a very tiring term, so please make use of the holidays to recharge...

This is the FINAL stopover before we enter term 2 and pia all we can for 5 more weeks.

The final 39 days will not be any easy.

hello CHSCO, im Hubert from CHSCO batch 2008.

For those who dont know me, you could ask your seniors yups!

But then anyway, im really sorry to all for not being able to go for practice for such a long time. I will really try to make more time for CHSCO!

And and i hope the balloting results has made it very clear to you all that CHSCO is one of the last performance during SYF!

But then, what do you all want to achieve?
Do you all want to have a normal end to SYF, or would you all want to have a resounding ending for SYF? Imagine the applause when the last note is being strummed in unison. Its the end already.

Yups, actually the 20 minutes or so on stage is something u guys have been working hard for. Every week after school, you all would spend time polishing up your own playing skills, and spending time rehearsing. However, at the end of every practice, ask yourself, what have u reallg gained? Have u gained more friendship? Have you gained more musicianship? Or have u just idled and wasted your time away?

Time is a really precious treasure. In a blink of an eye, its gonna be CTs MRs, and whatsoever. And then SYF is right here in your face. By then, is the songs u all have pracced the best u have put in? Do you have confidence in your orchestra? and lastly, have confidence in YOURSELF?
Have u been working hard for the pieces?
When u get up on that stage, the apprehension and tension you gather from the atmosphere would be overwhelming! When you get up that stage, u represent not only a part of CHSCO, but also CHS. U BELONG TO CHS!

And and, At the end of this journey, what do you all want to gain?

Is it just for the sake of participation? Or is the glory that u all yearn?

I guess the Sec 4s are really having a torturous time. Coping with O levels and stuff, guys it really isnt easy. Sometimes, give them a breather, give them words of compassion. Im sure it will lighten up their days! XD

Ask yourselves once again.

I believe some of you would have been aware of our balloting results.

Anyway here it is:

It is not going to be easy this time round.

In afternoon session 2 (our session),

we have Jurong Sec (54), HWA CHONG (56) and Seng Kang (57).

Each and every school poses a challenge.

But in this session,

it is obvious that Hwa Chong would be our main challenger in our SYF journey.

I'm sure all of you know about Hwa Chong's standard over the years,

it is fantastic.

Thus,

we would like everyone not to feel depressed or worried,

but work even harder to achieve our goal.

It may seem tough and tiring,

but we believe that,

with perseverance, we can do it.

We can remake what was done 2 years ago.
